A Month of Plant Eating

Ever since I can remember I was a meat-eater. A lot of people I know are the same. Though some of them tend to discriminate against cows and pigs, most of them don't. But as we all know there is yet another strange breed of people live among us who don't actually eat meat at all! You might not believe this but there are some reported cases of them not eating meat for as long as a year or two even. I swear I'm telling the truth. This always puzzled, baffled and intrigued me. Not me telling the truth, there never was any question about that, but people not eating meat. So I wanted to get to the bottom of this mystery. How on earth can someone go on for so long without tasting meat? I mean, let's face it. There's nothing like a well prepared steak, a lamb chop or a roasted chicken right? How can you even begin to think that any plant can substitute that? I like a good fried potato or a parippu curry, but comparing that to meat is like comparing a scooter to a Mercedes.

However, like I said, I wanted to get to the bottom of it. Which in other words I wanted to see what the world looks like to these plant-eaters. It must be grey scale, boring and tasteless, I was sure. I mean, did I tell you how good the steak is? So I just threw all caution to the wind and decided to become a plant-eater for a month.

Adjusting, at first, wasn't easy. Adjusting in the sense adjusting my lifestyle. As you probably know I live in Japan, and I live alone. And despite me being quite good at cooking - take my word for it even though I myself say it - I'm too lazy for it most of the time. So the combination of not cooking and living in Japan naturally mean eating a lot of meat. Usually I eat my breakfast at a coffee shop which contains at least sausages or bacon. I don't usually have lunch, and the dinner is either eaten outside, bought from a shop or in rare cases made at home. Unless it is the rare case, this means dinner has a lot of meat too. So this left me with no option but to cook most of my meals. This, at first, was a bitch. How on earth am I going to cook so frequently? But yours truly isn't one to give up so easily. I started having breakfast at home. For dinner, instead of cooking same old Sri Lankan food every time I opted for more variety. Italian, French, Moroccan, Russian and Maldivian food were among many varieties I tried. Okay that's stretching it a bit far (Only two paras ago I said that my telling the truth was never in question. Jeez) but I really did prepare different food, particularly Italian style. Then after a few days it was all part of my daily routine. Cooking wasn't a pain in the arse anymore. In fact, I started loving it so much I started improvising even. And I made through that month without even realizing it!

At first I thought I would not stand a chance, that I wouldn't last a week. Even if I did last a month by some miracle, I thought I'd run to a MacDonald's just when the clock hits midnight and gobble down dozen Big Macs. Well, it's been two days since the end of the month and I'm still to eat meat! Never did I think there would come a day I say this, but I actually enjoyed being vegetarian! When prepared well veggies taste as good, you feel guilt free since no more fatty stuff and unless you eat at fancy restaurants home cooked meals are always fresh and better. So much so that I started eating way too much I think I'm putting on again. Simply, you don't really need to eat dead animals it seems.

How God Messed Things Up

You see, I love chocolate and I love coffee. My love for chocolate is a very old one, so much so that if this my-love-for-chocolate was a person he would have been only two or three years younger than me. Ever since I knew food, I knew chocolate and then I also loved them. But my love for coffee is a recently developed one. Since I came to Japan a little over two years ago to be precise. Many things in that Paradise Island are absolutely brilliant, but coffee is just isn't one of them. Coffee there is just, let's say, average. However, coffee you find in Japan, now that's a different story. It really has the aroma, the taste of real coffee, and for two years it was part of my breakfast.

But I had to give them up recently. Fuck.

I've been suffering from migraine for some time, but I never really did anything about it. However, if you are one of the unlucky fellows out there you'd know how much pain it is when the bastard decides it is time to show up. Recently I found out that both chocolate and coffee are strong triggers of migraine attacks. So very, and I mean VERY reluctantly I gave them both up. Why oh why, dear God? Why did it have to be chocolate and coffee? Why couldn't it be something like broccoli or pumpkin or something else like that? I would have happily given it up then. Well technically you can't really give up something you don't eat already, but then again that's the whole point. Why is it that always the good stuff come with bad side effects and healthy food taste like old boots? Why couldn't broccoli contain all the cholesterol in the world and why couldn't pork have been the healthiest food out there? I have a feeling that pigs might not find this thought entertaining, but you can't satisfy everyone can you? Imagine a wold where chocolate and ice cream is good for your teeth. Now that's a world where I'd die to live in.

Seriously, God, you suck.

P.S.
I've never eaten old boots.

Because I'm bored.

Totally. And drowsy. Hence some random rantings.

-----------------------------

Today was our annual medical checkup. They shouldn't put oh-so-cute doctors to measure blood pressure. Seriously. A cutie holding your hand while wrapping that strap like thing around your arm doesn't help. Add to that her killer perfume. Doesn't help at all. My measured pressure today must be quite high than what it should have been. What's the point? And then the evil doc next to her took about a litre of blood out of me. True story. I felt so sad. How much do I have to eat again to gain all that. Easy for her to stick a needle in and just wait till the tube - actually, there were three - is filled. Oh, and I just realized that I still doesn't know my blood type. Meh. Oh and it seems I've gotten one and a half centimetres short from last year. Jeez. Benjamin Button is not alone, is he?

-----------------------------

Was wasting time on FB as usual. On FB homepage - not your profile - to the right side there appears photo albums of your friends right? Go check it if you're not sure. So... there was one album called "Akki's Wedding" and one of my good friend's name appeared next to it. All good except for the little matter that her sister is happily married for about four years now. I was like "What? Really? She got married again? But what happened to ayya?", before I realized that it was not my friend's album, but an album of someone else where she merely commented. Lucky I didn't tell anyone. Otherwise I'm sure that the said friend would have sent a missile this way.

-----------------------------

I want food. Sri Lankan food. Kos, Polos, Pol Sambal, Karawala and stuff like that. I've had enough of my cooking I might throw up the next time I eat them. I can see you already grinning. No you jerks, my cooking is not that bad, it's just the combinations I cook. Chicken and Parippu. Every week. Occasional potato curry or maybe beans. A salad once in a while. But maaaaan, who wants that shit. Sigh. Vot to do.

-----------------------------

There's another half an hour to go. Time is a bitch. When we want it to pass quickly, the bastard starts to walk with a snail. And when we want it to stop, when we want to savor our moments, it flies like a super sonic jet. Alright, 29 more to go. Way too sleepy to write anymore. Let me hit the publish button...

Food Rants...

Now that LadyD and DeeCee have gone on and made me envy them, I though I might as well write something about some good shit that would make them envy me.

So I thought. Hard.

Fucking hard.

Absofuckinglutely hard.

And finally realized that there is nothing really I have here could make them such.

Jeez...

How much do I miss good ol' Sri Lankan food?
My mom's cooking...

Ain't this heaven?

Pittu with Lunumiris for breakfast? Or Kiribath and Lunumiris? Or think about Idi Aappa with Pol Sambol and Parippu. Man... now I can't stop this. The list goes on. And rice and curry. I'm so lazy to cook ( even if I do, only I can eat them ) that I hardly ever have those good stuff. I haven't eaten a Papadam in nine months. Rice with Pol Sambol and Papadam and Parippu is heaven! Aaaahhh... A parippu wadey. *Sigh*. Then those sweet Pancakes, Lawariya and what not. Jeez... I think I'm going to die here. And add to that Choc Rotti, the newest invention. I think I should sue the people who go eat all that shit and then blog about it too.

OK. I feel a bit better now. :P

Instead of all those, I've been eating this kind of things here.

I know for a fact that most of us Sri Lankans go like Jeez... why would anyone want to eat raw fish when you can cook them in like million ways that are out there. Didn't I think the same before?

But.

It's not that bad actually, when you get past the slimy texture. :P
You just got to eat it the way it is supposed to eat.
First, there is this sauce thing, which has a strong taste that goes along with the raw fish quite well. Then you need to add a little bit of Wasabi and mix them well. Remember, this little is quite important as Wasabi is probably one of the strongest chillies in the world.

That reminds me a good story. The first time I ate Sashimi (raw fish, that is), I mixed a whole lot of Wasabi thinking "Oh we're Sri Lankans, we can handle anything. What could be that hot"

Big mistake.

The first bite ran shivers through my mouth to the nose and then to the brain and back through my spine. To say the least. Several glasses of cool water and a few minutes later, I was still trying to stop my tears. So this should be a handy tip for whoever wants to try their hands on it.

Anywayz, what I was saying is that though the idea of raw fish doesn't appeal much when you eat it a couple of times it is in fact quite good. But then again that depends more on the person I guess. There are even some Japs who doesn't eat them...

Then one day I ate something even more interesting.
This day we were attending the summer party given by the landlord of the building where our company is located. And he's a pretty rich guy. Well, a bit more than pretty rich I guess. To own a five story building in Japan. So it was in his home - or on the lawn in front, rather. Which ran more than 100 feet.
So there, a dish came to the table, sorta meat balls like things along with little pieces of toast. I was with another two Japs and nobody was eating it, so I inquired what that was. They were trying to explain me but my Japanese being not that good we were going nowhere. So I thought "what the hell" and helped myself to one. It was pretty good. Tasted like roast beef, if anything.

So... the next day, while in the office with the same Jap, the subject came up and we looked up the word on the Internet. And it turned out to be...
...
...
...
...
...
... a snail.
